This month we are spotlighting the Treasurer of our Board of Directors, Jill Michalski. Jill is a Certified Public Accountant with Corwin & Company.

We asked Jill to share a little bit more about herself so that we could all get to know her a little better.

How did you learn about The Children’s Center of Medina County? Why did you decide to join the Board of Directors?

I attended a Women’s Network of Northeast Ohio luncheon where the former executive director, Rhonda Wurgler, was the presenter that afternoon. She talked about the center and what they do and I instantly was interested in getting involved.  She then approached me at a later meeting about being on the board.

What is your current role on the board? What do you do in that role?

My current role is the Treasurer of the Board, I am also on the Capital Campaign Committee and Fundraising Committee. As Treasurer, I review the monthly financial statements and present them to the Board at our monthly meeting.  I also review the annual audit and tax return before it is finalized.

What are you most proud of in your work with The Children’s Center?

During my six years on the board, I am super proud that we were able to purchase a new building, completely renovate it, secure a mortgage on that building and pay off the entire debt.  I feel like I am leaving the board in a good financial position when my term is up in June.

What is the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?

The best advice wasn’t spoken to me, I learned it by watching. My parents were the hardest-working people I know.  My father showed up to work every single day and sometimes worked side jobs for extra money.  He also never hesitated to help a friend or neighbor if they needed it.  My mother also worked a full-time job, kept the house clean, and cooked us a warm meal every day.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was really young, I wanted to be a secretary, I love organization. But as I got older and took my first accounting class in high school, I was hooked and knew I wanted to be an accountant.

What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?

My family and I love to watch movies. Last summer we purchased a projector and speakers and were able to have movie nights outside under the stars.  So fun!!

What is one song you have completely memorized?

I only know the words to one song, Metal Health by Quiet Riot, I grew up in the era of hair bands and I love to blast that song in the car on the way home from work.

What season is your favorite?

My absolute favorite season is autumn.  I love the sunsets, the weather is perfect – warm during the day and chilly at night. I love the color of the leaves, my two sons were born in the autumn and Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday.

What does the community need to know about The Children’s Center?

I think the community needs to know that child abuse happens right here in Medina County. The kids in this community are our greatest asset and need to be protected.  The Center is crucial in that protection.
