Living with Integrity:
Spotlight on Chief Edward R. Kinney

This month, we are spotlighting Chief Edward R. Kinney. For nearly three decades, Chief Edward R. Kinney has dedicated his career to protecting and serving the Medina community—first as a patrol officer and now as Chief of Police. His commitment to public safety is matched by his passion for strengthening community connections, particularly through his service on the Board of Directors for The Children’s Center of Medina County.

From leading the Medina Police Department to volunteering on various county task forces and professional associations, Chief Kinney is a leader deeply rooted in his community. Whether he’s in uniform or gathered around a campfire with his wife and their dog, his values remain the same: integrity, service, and compassion. His story is a reminder that behind every strong community is a network of people who care deeply, and act boldly.

We asked Chief Kinney to share about himself so we could all get to know him better.

Roles and Responsibilities

How did you learn about The Children’s Center of Medina County? Why did you decide to join the Board of Directors?

As Chief of Police, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that trauma can have on children and families.  The Children’s Center was always a respected partner in these situations, providing critical support when it mattered most.  Joining the Board was a natural next step, and it allowed me to contribute beyond my position as a police officer and serve in a way that strengthens our whole community.

What is your current role on the Board? What do you do in that role?

I serve as a board member and work closely with the rest of the team to support strategic planning, community outreach, and policy development.  I also act as a liaison between The Center and local law enforcement, helping build trust and collaboration.  Additionally, I help connect the dots between public safety and child advocacy.

Personal Insights and Reflections

What are you most proud of in your work with The Children’s Center?

I’m proud of how we’ve grown the capacity to serve children and families in crisis – particularly The Center’s work in creating a space where kids feel safe, heard, and supported.  Whenever a child walks through The Center’s doors and finds comfort and care instead of fear, that’s the real win.  We have a very strong team of employees working at The Children’s Center who make a difference daily.

What is the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?

“Character is what you do when no one’s watching.” My father taught me that early on, and I’ve tried to live by it every day, in and out of uniform.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always knew my path was in public service through fire, EMS, or police.  My father was a police officer as well.

What is your favorite way to unwind after a busy day?

I enjoy camping with my wife and our dog.

What is one song you have completely memorized?

Any Pink Floyd song – definitely my favorite group.

Community Engagement and Support

What does the community need to know about The Children’s Center?

The Children’s Center isn’t just a building; it’s a lifeline.  The Children’s Center is where healing begins for children who’ve experienced the unthinkable.  It’s where law enforcement, child advocates, and medical professionals come together to put the child first.  It is also the beginning stage for a child victim to receive justice.  The Children’s Center doesn’t just respond to trauma; it helps rebuild hope and begin healing.
