This month we’re spotlighting one of our Board Members, Julia Zettl. We are so grateful for the dedicated Board Members who give their time, talent, and heart to The Children’s Center of Medina County.
Julia serves on our Board of Directors as a member of the Marketing Committee, where she brings her expertise to help guide and support our staff in sharing CCMC’s mission with the community. You may have also spotted her at one of our outreach tables, connecting with community members face-to-face.
We are so thankful for Julia’s generosity of time and passion for the children and families we serve. People like her make this work possible! 💛
Roles and Responsibilities
How did you learn about The Children’s Center of Medina County? How did you first become involved with The Center?
In my previous role, our IT person was concluding his term serving on The Children’s Center’s Board of Directors. He thought I would be a good fit and encouraged me to get involved. Supporting the work of The Children’s Center is a mitzvah, an act of goodness and doing right by others.
What is your current volunteer role? What do you do in that role?
I’m currently on the Marketing Committee. But, credit where it’s due, Kristen is amazing at marketing The Children’s Center, so most of my role is reporting her great work to the Board.
What are you most proud of in your work with The Children’s Center?
That every decision we make as a Board is for the longevity of The Children’s Center to continue their amazing work, and to support the incredible people doing that work.
Personal Insights and Reflections
What is the best advice you were ever given?
The aphorism that I think about the most, and have passed on to other people, is “Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards,” by former Major League Baseball pitcher Vernon Law.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
So many different things! I wanted to grow up and be a zebra, a teacher, a nurse, an artist. I’ve been many things as a grown-up: a financial planning assistant, a development manager, an event planner, a client relationship manager, a professional association chapter executive. I never got to be a zebra, though.
What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?
I was a Fine Arts minor in college, so you’ll find me creating. Right now, my husband and I will unwind in front of a documentary or educational program and I’ll work on my cross-stitch or color something. On weekends, I’ll work on bigger projects, like teaching myself to sew clothing or paint silk scarves with watercolor.
What is one song you have completely memorized?
I joke that I would have done much better on the GRE and GMAT if my brain wasn’t full of song lyrics to songs I haven’t even heard in 20 years. That said, I’m going to be the best sleeper agent on your trivia team.
Community Engagement and Support
What does the community need to know about The Children’s Center?
Childhood Sexual Abuse is a devastating and life-changing occurrence. It’s a bell that cannot be unrung. But the work The Children’s Center does is paramount in making sure that it doesn’t become the defining event of a child’s life.
